...I just typed the words "Where is" on google while looking for info for an essay, and the first option that popped up, before I'd finished typing my question, was "...Azerbaijan."
A sad indictment of our geographical knowledge.

Maybe people were thinking "hang on, last time I studied the states of the former soviet union I'm sure Azerbaijan was in Asia". But no, you're probably right, most people are dim.

Guilty...I googled to check my facts pre-rant!

Ian, if only it were for that reason, however I'm fairly certain that most of those who googled it (with the obvious exception of Mr duke above) did so with the thought, "Where the fuck is that?"

I watched a few mins of a quiz show last night. The two contestants didn't know whether Washington or Moscow was further away. Perhaps it was televised from a ship about a third of the way across the Atlantic.
I wish Google could give me the answer to "Where is" all the stuff my wife keeps moving.Posted 2 years ago # -
Azerbaijan is somewhere in Russia innit?
Was their song any good?
Or was it one of those Euro raps, where they try to sing in American accents?

The song was surprisingly good for a Eurovision entry; crap by any other standards.

What's an Azer Baijan? Is it like an onion bhaji?
And Greg, I'm ashamed to admit that I saw that too and struggled with the question about which is further away. But in my defence, my geography is appalling. Not much of a defence I'll admit.
On the same show last week the question 'which of these is not named after a classical god or goddess?' was met with the contestant smiling, doing a little dance while saying 'I know this one' and then proceeding to start putting all their money on Nike trainers...

I watched, mostly from behind my fingers, and picked either Switzerland or Spain to win on the basis that they were respectively the most archetypal Eurovision song and the most plinky-plonky sing-along. They came last and about 4th last. Something scary is going on.

It's quite odd that a country that borders Iran should be thought of as 'European'. I guess next year's winner will be Vietnam, on the basis of it having a French restaurant in Saigon.

Moldova's entry was quite good...I thought their amusing hats, although they were what initially drew me in, were a distraction and ultimately undermined their musical craftsmanship.

Is that why Iran are a bit pissy - because Azerbaijan are in Eurovision and they're not? Surely we could extend the borders of 'Europe' a bit more. How strong's their economy? Should we be inviting them to join the EU as well?

Iran will get even more pissy if some of the other eligible countries enter - Jordan, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya are all members of the European Broadcasting Union and could have a go. Morocco did in 1980.
End nerdery.

Apparently a lot of Arab countries broadcast it or used to. In 1978, Jordan TV put a still life on while Israel performed, then when it became increasingly obvious that Israel was going to win, cut abruptly to another programme and got flooded with irate phone calls from fans.
There is a very good book by Tim Moore (yes, from the Torygraph) called 'Nul Points' in which he tries to track down all 14 of those who have scored no points at Eurovision since 1982 and finds most of them. Highly recommended.
