In a ground-breaking proposal, Barack Obama today offered to swap the US health care system with David Cameron's NHS.
It is no secret that both of the world leaders are unhappy with their own systems for public healthcare, each eyeing the other's hospitals and payment systems from across the Atlantic. But today could signal a breakthrough for each of them, when Obama proposed "hey Dave, swapsies for keepsies?"
On the face of it, both systems have similarities. Both provide healthcare based on insurance, but the US system uses private insurance, where the UK (on paper at least) uses compulsory National Insurance. But it's the little details that cause jealousy, and a swap might leave both men happy.
"The negotiations of the swap are at an advanced stage", revealed a diplomat. "To sweeten the deal, Mr Obama has also offered to swap House for Holby City, and to allow Mr Cameron to have a go on the lights and woo-woos."
The move could herald a radical shift in political strategy. "The UK has a touch too many aircraft carriers on order, which we would be happy to swap for some decent boots, armour and cool walkie-talkies for our troops", the diplomat explained. "And there are high hopes that Russell Brand can be swapped for keepsies with Rich Hall."
One final sticking point must yet be overcome, however. Neither Cameron or Obama can agree on who should keep Tony Blair.
