Hah.
As a Londoner born who once spent four years in Stoke on Trent, I can only agree with them.

Is Stoke "North"?

Anything past Watford is "North" to Landanars isn't it?

Anyone who has visited Stoke recently will probably agree it is northern in mentality even if not geographically.

Haven't they got a football team in Stoke?

Yes, though I believe some southern town have teams that play association football, not that they win much, when was the last time you heard of London F.C winning a competition?
How large a part of the Northern mentality is football.
Discuss, in Newcastle, in a Southern football teams top, whilst stroking your chin.In my defence I am a Scots expat, in Devon.

In my defence my missus is from Stoke so I feel qualified to label her a northerner.
And one trip to Hanley (the premier shopping district in Stoke-on-Trent) would leave you in no doubt as to what part of the country you were in. There must be one independent bakery for every 10 residents. And the locals are doing everything in their powers to make sure they all make a profit from their delicious pasties.

According to Stuart Mackonie's excellent 'Pies and Prejudice', Stoke is in the Midlands, because it's in Staffordshire, and so is Birmingham. He argues that 'The North' starts with Crewe, but I find it starts with a brass band.

Many years ago, I went to watch Arsenal play Liverpool (I think Arsenal were managed by Bertie Mee - it was that long ago!). I was on the tube back from the ground, and the carriage was full of Arsenal supporters, all in red. Then this old boy in red got on - a Liverpool supporter. So the old boy starts going on about how great Liverpool are. And to their credit (I told you it was many years ago!) the Arsenal supporters played along with him, and pretended to be Liverpool supporters too. How things change....

so that's where Shankly got to.
Let's be clear about where the north is; it's anything above the line drawn between Bristol and The Wash.
If it was good enough for Tinniswood, then it's good enough for me.
