Flags flew across the nation as grateful motorists celebrated the slashing of petrol prices from an exorbitant 135p a litre to an incredible 139p or even 140p.
Opinion was unanimous that this was due to the incredible generosity of George Osborne, who defied all expectations by making petrol affordable again.
Asif Samir, a petrol station manager in Devizes, said: 'Give me your credit card, I'm on the phone, type in your pin code, oh dear I've dropped it, thank you very much, go away.'
A government spokesman confirmed the fall in prices. 'Yes, petrol has gone down by 4 or 5 p a litre, productivity has gone up, growth has gone up, unemployment has gone down, and so has the temperature. Hold on a moment... What do you mean, it's upside down?'

Average tax burden goes down from £8,300 per annum to £8,700. VAT reduced from 17.5% to 20%. This is spooky. It's like being inside George Osborne's head...
