TV bosses in the United States have confirmed the cancellation of the detective series CSI: Miami because they can no longer find enough sunglasses to make the show without glaring continuity errors.
The main character, Horatio Caine, wears the glasses in every episode and usually only removes them to make an obvious quip or pun.
But the actor who plays him, David Caruso, has a habit of signing the glasses and handing them out to fans. And because of that, the show uses around 400 pairs per series.
"The numbers are unsustainable." a spokesman for the show's maker CBS said. "Because the shades were a particular design, it emerged through a thorough audit of the budget that the production was spending an exponentially increasing amount on buying replacements."
"Therefore, we put an ultimatum to David. Either stop handing the glasses out, or we close the show. Unfortunately, David chose the latter."
Industry insiders say the show's cancellation will also have a potentially devastating effect on the image of ginger people, as David Caruso is the most widely seen copper-top on screens around the world.
