Firstly, a declaration of interest.
I work in local radio and while my contract is up at the end of next month, the suggested plan to merge the BBC local radio network with 5live, would directly affect people I've worked alongside for years.
In case you've missed it, the BBC has to make cuts amounting to 20% of it's total budget and one of the ideas being floated is to remove 5live from AM and broadcast it between 9 and 5 every day on the local radio network.
Only the breakfast show and Drivetime would be locally produced, with the future of news bulletins yet to be decided.
Now, I've no idea if you listen to your local BBC radio station, but it doesn't really matter.
This is an assault on local news and content, no matter how you cut it. The proposal would cut the BBC's wage bill because around 700 people would be out of work. The ability of the BBC to try and hold locally elected officials to account would be wiped out and left in the hands of groups with vested interests like Trinity Mirror and Johnstone Press.
So that's the situation as I see it. And yes, it's a very personal view.
But I hope enough of you believe that BBC Local Radio is worth fighting for.
Anyway, on with the music.
