Protest singer Billy Bragg today turned his wrath on those who say that he's betrayed his working class roots by living in a huge mansion on Chesil Beach.
'Now look here, you chaps,' he said at a news conference. 'All this guff about one betraying one's roots is bally tosh. Those spiteful chaps who spread this kind of tripe are oiks of the worst degree. One has done one's best for the jolly old working class, and one feels that one therefore has a right to spend a little of the dosh one has earned to find oneself one's castle, so to speak. One takes one's guitar to play one's songs to costermongers and similar jolly fellows, and they are decent enough to give one a few quid for the meter and tea and cakes at The Ivy.
'So one may say to one's critics that they should jolly well skedaddle orf and leave a working class hero such as oneself to enjoy a bit of peace and champagne.'
Billy Bragg: 'People who say one's betrayed the working class are bally oiks!'
