Barclays bank revealed today that it would again spread the burden of the UKs financial woe by reducing the 'Start of Lent' round of bonuses.
Chief executive Bob Diamond released figures showing that predicted bonus payments of over £1b had been dramatically reigned in to yet again to acknowledge the suffering of the 'man in the street' and that the bank would only pay out around £700m in start of lent bonuses. "This will come hard after the recent slashing of half term bonus's that we made our staff take, and it's only as far back as January when the new years bonus's were cut for all staff by 30%", Diamond explained, "but we all have our cross to bear and I feel it's our duty to help out the country in this way."
But many within the banking community are less selfless. One futures trader, who wishes to remain anonymous said that the loss of %20 of his bonus was "too soon after losing a large chunk of my Christmas bonus, Hanukkah bonus, Thanksgiving bonus and worst of all having my Kwanzaa bonus halved. Cocaine doesn't devalue in a falling market you know."
