Following the news that Manchester been rated ‘Most Foul Mouthed City’ by Four Square website, councillors have quickly announced that they intend to cash in on the accolade by launching the city as European Capital of Swearing for 2012.
The month long festival promises to be high profile affair and events already confirmed include poetry readings by John Cooper Clarke, back to back screenings of Shameless and a star studded live televised gala ‘An Audience with Shaun Ryder’. Youngsters will also be involved in the Capital of Swearing month with plans already underway for hundreds of school children to launch the festival by joining CBBC TV presenters Dick and Dom for a mass shouting of ‘Bogies!’ in the centre of Manchester.
The surprise announcement is thought to be a typically Mancunian reaction where criticism and negative reaction is traditionally shrugged off and worn as a badge of honour by the city’s residents.
A spokesman for the council said “Manchester has always been a hotbed for creativity, and swearing is just one way of expressing yourself. I think the European Capital of Swearing Festival will be really good for the city and anyone who says otherwise can f*** off back to Brussels.”
