Steven Davies, a gay man, has told the world what his family knew and his team-mates suspected, that he is a professional cricketer currently playing for Surrey and England. “It’s not something that everyone would admit to”, said Steven, as he ‘came out’ today in a newspaper article, “but I’m comfortable with my sporting orientation, and I don’t mind who knows it.
“Cricket may not be 'cool', like football, and the money, by comparison, is laughable. But it’s the life I’ve chosen. I accept I may have to put up with a few cricket-phobic comments, and, unfortunately, there’s still a lot of sporting intolerance to be found within the gay community. They don’t understand why I should be putting on my wicket-keeping gloves and strapping on my pads, rather than going out clubbing or looking for a bit of rough trade in the park. But this is 2011 and I hope that people will come to understand that playing cricket, like being gay, is something to celebrate, not be ashamed of”...
