A judge has blocked plans to build a huge book-powered power plant in Amazon’s Seattle headquarters. The plant, part of Amazon’s ambitious diversification plans was originally planned to utilise billions of un-sold books but has been the subject of global protest.
Celebrities such as Sting and Bono, have spearheaded the protest to protect what they see as a global heritage. The books form an area the size of Wales and are believed to be home to a diverse range of species. Some of the people living deep in the piles of books have had little meaningful contact with other humans since leaving university.
A spokesman for Amazon explained that although they started as an on-line bookseller they now sell all sorts of electrical gizmos and with the popularity of electronic books, the paper version is no longer required. He stated that generating energy was a natural extension to the business and sees the books as a wasted natural resource. “Huge tracts of forest have already been destroyed to create these books. In hindsight we could have cut out the middle-man and just set fire to Brazil.”
Following the blocking of the plan, Amazon are now looking for new ideas to use the books. One suggestion has been to fill wooden shelving in domestic houses to make the owners look cleverer than they are.
