Despite being nominated for 15 BAFTAS and destined for success at the Oscars ‘The Kings Speech’ has been condemned by some film critics for over-glorifying violence and promoting race hatred.
Although loosely based on a speech made by King George VI of Great Britain in 1939, critics argue the film relies too heavily on gratuitous violence and the random slaughter of over 65 million people in order to drive the plot.
But the film’s producer Tom Hooper hit back by saying that the 6 year killing spree that started in Europe but quickly spread around the world, was of paramount importance in the making of the film and should be looked at in the context of the whole film and not as an isolated incident.
Some critics think the levels of violence portrayed in the film go too far and spoil the potential comedic possibilities of the film from the start.
‘It’s a classic gag and always goes down well with the public’ said critic Chris Barsanti ‘stuttering can be really funny so why spoil it with all the killing – and what happend to the crazy bar mitzvah gags, you can’t have a box office smash these days without a crazy bar mitzvah getting totally out of control. In fact, you don’t see many Jews in this film at all. Come to think of it, they all get killed off early on.
How did they get funding for this movie – is that Edward guy Muslim?
‘All the great films – even the sci fi classics like Alien and Starship Trooper, need to contain an element of truth and honesty. Films, no matter what the genre, need to be believable on some level. But I think the movie going public will find 65 million deaths a little hard to swallow – even by Hollywood standards that’s just not going to happen. Plus the fact they had some English guy in the lead role which just didn’t work for me.
I know Kevin Bacon would have said yes in a heartbeat , he’s been working on his abs lately and looks amazing. He would have made the perfect English King with a stammer. Just lose the violence and some of the ethnic cleansing and you have the perfect rom-com, oh and maybe a few name changes. Edward is soooo last century. Lazlo is a really cool name or maybe Kristian ....and does it really need to be set in London...what’s wrong with L.A. ?
And who’s idea was it to make the speech therapist Australian for chrissakes...OK so you might be able to slip in 65 million deaths, genocide on a biblical scale and the near destruction of the planet without anybody noticing but please, nobody in their right mind is going to go with an Australian speech therapist. I thought you said it was based on truth.
I’ve not seen that many random killings in a single film since Bronson made ‘Bambi’s Revenge’ - but that was mostly the slime-ball hunters who got wasted for butchering his mom, so who cared.
‘We did think long and hard about so many killings’ said Hooper ‘but it was about a war in Europe not a remake of ‘Gun fight at the OK Coral’
SHIT – drifted into an Episode of Episodes towards the end.....can somebody else run with this?
