Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce on the Isle of Wight say although they agree in principal to the recent name change given to the seaport town of Cowes, the new name has not entirely proved successful in attracting tourism to the region.
Businesses across the town have asked the Chamber if they would reconsider reverting back to the old name of Cowes before the new season begins in May.
Although the new name has only been in existence for a few weeks and received widespread support at the time, even the locals are beginning to question whether the Chamber have made the right choice for their town.
With tourist numbers dwindling in recent years the town realised it needed to do something radical in order to buck the trend.
So in an effort to spruce up the sleepy image of the seaport town, the Chamber of Commerce ran a competition to see if residents on the island could come up with a catchy name to tag onto their existing name.
The competition received over 45 entries, which included names such as CowesGreat, CowesTops, CowesBrill and CowesFab but it was Reg Parsons from the neighbouring town of Northwood who came up with the winning name tag of Hit
Reg, who received a book token for £5.00 said he had been visiting Cowes for over 60 years and had never considered Cowes to be anything less and no matter what they called it in future, he would never change his mind about the place.

Have some stars! I read it slowly so as not to spoil the punch line. Worth the wait.

Old gag, which admittedly doesn't really work in writing:
What's brown and steams and comes out of cows backwards?
The Isle of Wight ferry.
