In the spirit of the Big Society, the Big Issue will now be sold by volunteers rather than by 'paid' homeless people. The homeless are said to be signing up in droves to volunteer for the magazine, happily surrendering the traditional vendors' cut of the magazine price in order to give a bit back to society.
A Big Issue spokesperson said "Like so many other sections of the population, many homeless people have yet to realise how rewarding volunteering can be, and of course there are also so many more homeless people now, with the new housing policies and repossessions, so there's plenty of big society capacity to get much more selling done for free..."
A vendor in Birmingham enthused "I think it's a great plan. After all, who needs a hostel bed for the night or a sandwich or cup of tea when you can feel this kind of deep fulfilment instead?"
