The original May Day bank holiday was brought in by the socialist government of James Callaghan to allow British Trades Unionists to enjoy the spectacle of Russia parading its military supremacy through Red Square. Its significance was lost as young socialists grew up and moved to second homes in Dorset where they re-created the village festivals based on period drama.
The proposed move to October is part of David Cameron’s radical tourism strategy. In order to keep Brits at home the new Bank holiday is designed to alienate as many foreigners as possible. Having rejected “Belgrano Day” and “Desert Storm Day”, leading names being muted are: “Trafalgar Day”, “Waterloo Day” and “Two World Wars and one World Cup Day”.
Tourism Minister John Penrose said, "An autumn bank holiday will give us all a new focus for celebrating what Britain does best – skiving off work on Mondays”.
