Following 5 days of rioting on the streets of Egypt and with Tunisia in imminent meltdown, Skysport have finally bowed to pressure from protesters and agreed to reinstate presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys with immediate effect.
Feelings throughout the middle east have been running high since Sky took the decision to release the pair, with millions of Egyptians taking to the streets to voice their anger at Gray’s dismissal.
With the death toll mounting and clashes with security forces spiralling out of control, Sky have come under increasing pressure from the Egyptian government to give the disgraced soccer pundits their old jobs back.
President Mubarak has reassured western leaders that appointing the duo to cover Monday nights Blue Square Premiership (South) match between Havant West and Maidenhead will put an end to the bloody conflict and order will be restored to the streets of Cairo. Although Mubarak later admitted he could not completely rule out further skirmishes with security forces if Maidenhead are awarded another dubious penalty similar to the one that saw them take all three points in last season’s ill tempered fixture.
Leaders of the unrest promised that if Keys and Gray can clear up the ‘foul throw’ debate once and for all and are allowed to throw in some witty banter about how cold it is up north in January and how they bet that some of the African players wished they were back home in bong-bongo land - then there should be no need for Mubarak to step down as president of Egypt or to even consider setting up an interim government to take over the running of the country.
Riot police have so far failed to regain control of the streets of Cairo and the army have been put on standby to quell the rioting.
Although the death toll is now over 100 and with many thousands injured as a result of police brutality, there is still some way to go before we see the levels of violence that marred last seasons 4th round cup replay between Millwall and West Ham. That game is still under investigation from the FA but the unofficial line is they think parents could have done much more to stop the competiton from getting out of hand, long before the under 5s teams were intoduced.
