Labour’s Shadow chancellor Alan Johnson is to step down from front line politics with immediate effect in order to spend more time doing his post round.
Johnson, who has struggled to combine the role of Shadow Chancellor with his job as ‘postie’ for Kingston Upon Hull (West and Hessle) waved to photographers as he drove away from the Commons in his little red van, only stopping once to empty the letter box at the end of the Mall
Although his appointment was something of a surprise to most insiders at Labour HQ, Johnson insists the motivating factor behind his decision was purely ambition and not politics.
‘I might be 60 but I still have ambition and the future looks bright for us posties’ said Johnson as he popped a flyer for half-price double glazing in the letter box at Number 5 ‘which is more than can be said for the Labour Party under David Miliband’s leadership’.
Plus the fact I get to wear shorts every day in the winter, which you hardly ever get to do in the Commons. Unless it’s an all-night debate and everybody has fallen asleep. I can sit there in my shorts, flicking rubber bands at the Tories and as long as I don’t have to stand up, then nobody knows.
But my future lies in letter boxes, not despatch boxes.
Sorry Ed....did I say David Miliband back there.
Posties eh...always getting people’s names mixed up.
Er, it is Ed isn't it?
‘Being Shadow chancellor is interfering with my post round’ claims Johnson
