"La Lorraine" sounds like a drag queen's name.

They are all named after the region, and not visa versa. I doubt girls were named Lorraine prior to the 19th Century, and drag queens only after the name caught on with the middle classes, post WWII.

Actually it looks like he confused Alsace with Germany. Which the Germans have been doing for quite some time...and Poland...and Austria...and...

I think Oxbridge is right, Hunter.
"Allemagne" is the French word for "Germany". (wtf, right?)
For "Lorraine", the French just use the English word for that region (as with most place names, the French tend to follow English spelling, even if they don't pronounce it that way. For example, they have kept the "s" in Paris.)

You're quite right, Mr Bridge, but neither Allemagne nor Germany rhyme with "ass", the rule for bouts rimés being that The Rhyme is King. The event itself might be better served if the last line were "Mistook la Lorraine et l'Aslace.
It won't be because of lingering Vichyissm that he did this, but merely because he's history's plaything, not it's master. Un arriviste with a tin ear who squanders himself on vulgarities.
