The discount furniture chain DFS has confirmed it is to pay people upto £500 to take away sofas from their stores across the UK.
In what's seen as the ultimate New Year giveaway, the firm said the move the logical conclusion to their endless preice cutting sales.
"We've discounted and discounted sofas on a regular basis over the last 3 years and we've still not sold the quanitites of furniture we'd have liked. So we've nowhere left to go. The only course of action open to us is to pay people to take sofas and then start again after the January sales." DFS' Managing Director Simon Banner said.
The decision has shocked industry insiders. "We are aware that DFS has a long history of extreme discounting, but this is a new one on us." Felicity Driscoll, chair of the Association of Furniture Retailers said.
"I'm not sure where it will end, except with low, low prices across The Range, a chain of homeware stores around the country."
