...as soon as we get past the shortest day, but I'd swear it got dark earlier today than it did on Tuesday. Are the days going to keep on getting shorter?
Is this some new phenomenon we should be start worrying about - global darkening?
If it is, what can we do to prevent it (ie what will the green fascists and politicians looking for a cheap vote tell us we should be doing to prevent it)?

Light rationing. In order to reduce carbon emissions, the Government have allocated a fixed amount of light, per person, per annum. Clearly, you must have used too much of yours in the summer. Don't mention global darkening - you'll entice arrgghhgarry back in from the cold. :)

I've been around a bit in me life but don't ever remember the expression "the nights are pulling out". Where be that from then, Mr At?
I've also noticed that after the solstice the evenings draw in for another week or so before getting better. The extra light seems to be in the morning. If we'd voted Labour we'd all have got free tickets to New Zealand from October to April

Droit de Seignuer, if I remember correctly, was a feudal right exercised by randy French nobles; it meant that if a peasant wench was to be wed, the local lord had the right to have the first go, before hubby did. Peterborough has something similar today; before a wench gets wed, the whole town has a crack at her before her husband.
