I want to ask a really stoopid question.

How can you work for the Daily Mail one day, and the News Statesman the next?

Now, my question is:

My confession is: I quite like reading the Daily Mail.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a barking mad right wing racist. I think it's quite well written, that's all. it's quite readable.

I've been too ashamed to admit it so far, because I like Oxbridge (never met him) and Golgo (he seems quite a sweet and decent sort and he must live near me). I always feel slightly ashamed because of my Daily Mail fixation.

but if left wing people work for it to, surely I'm not a bad man!

Am I a nasty sort?

Advice please!

I tried reading the Guardian, but it's choc full of privately educated lefties!

Come on, help me. I want to be a good man. But I don't look good in a duffel coat, or harris tweed.

Mind you, I don't look good in anything.

I do understand Stoopy, I really do. People with your affliction are more common than you'd think. The number of stories I hear in my professional life of men, like yourself, who spend hours looking for out-of-the-way newsagents to furtively buy their speciality periodical in; the driving past golf clubs daring yourself to go in; the hanging around estate agencies hoping, but not hoping, to catch the eye of one of those intoxicating creatures and the tantalising prospect of it leading to a discussion of house prices, is all very common and perfectly understandable.

The good news is that there are many therapies, I won't call them cures, for this. Electric shocks, emetic aversion therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, hormone injections. I promise you, there is hope!

It's a brave admission Stoopy. The first step to recovery is admitting your problem.

Seriously though, I'm not sure what paper could be deemed to be a good read to be honest, so you're as well off with the Mail as anything else. It doesn't mean you agree with their outdated and ridiculous view of the world.

My wife reads the online version and often amuses me with tales of their latest crusade or health warning. Those crazy Daily Mail journos, what will they get offended by next?

'Cos it's a job. I have lefty friends who work for the right-wing Yorkshire Post, 'cos it's the obvious employer for their journalistic skills in the area. If they'd insisted on working only for publications whose politics matched their own, they'd be wandering round the house all day, wrapped in a soiled duvet, composing tickers for NewsBiscuit...

I love the online Daily Mail because it is so daft. Referencing the DM in a gag is easy and serves as great comic shorthand, but the real thing is almost beyond parody.

Especially like their touching insistence that Prince William and the offspring of Prince Andrew and Fergie - their names escape me - are stunningly good looking. It takes a particularly rabid monarchist to get moist about any of the House of Windsor.

The readers comments are always worth a read too. But sometimes I remember that these people are writing sincerely and not trying to make me laugh then feel a little bit sad.

Most of what the Mail complains about actually gets changed in the end.
Immigration being the latest - Mind you that was obvious years ago to anyone with a brain.
And next has to be the human rights legislation - please.

I'd recomend you all go out and read Flat Earth News by Nick Davies who will tell you that the only newspaper left that has funds to get it's hacks to work as proper investigative journalists is the DM, all other papers just can't match it resource wise - that doesn't mean that having better resources and more time and support to write good copy = non-bias.

You're right. Flat Earth News is one of the best books I've read in a long time.

There are some eye popping revelations about the Observer too.

Everyone should buy it. It's an ideal Xmas present too.

Now I'm in confessional mode, I want to get it all off my chest.

I quite enjoy Quentin Letts' column, I think Craig Brown is brilliant and Martin Samuels is always worth reading.

I even quite like Richard Littlejohn.

In spite of all this, I promise you I'm not some nasty right wing reactionary. No honestly.

I draw the line at Jan Moir and Alison Pearson though.
