In the wake of the relaxation of working hours regulations for HGV drivers because ”It’s snowing a bit”, an industry spokesman today called of the lifting of “prohibitive rules” regarding the use of handheld mobile phones.
“Everyone knows that these rules aren’t meant for the Knights of the Road. Our members are quite capable of piloting a 42 Tonne articulated truck around ice strewn roundabouts while only inches from the back of a nervous family of four in a Nissan Micra while having a blazing row with their girlfriend. After all, they do it for a living.”
The call was supported by other pressure groups as well. A spokeswoman for Mumsnet added that “As multitasking, busy mothers driving large vehicles at a speed to suit our own mood, we don’t believe these rules were ever framed for us. It’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”
