When I was working in the BBC 10 years ago or so, I was told that every time Hugh Edwards was reading the main evening news an elderly woman would ring up to complain to say "Why do you have that welshman reading the English news?"
I bet the same old woman would have been ringing in to complain about Tom Jones using the english language when he sings.
Apparently women fancy Tom Jones. Can you make head nor tail of that?
Moira Stewart now reads the Caribbean News with a Scottish accent.
same went for Trevor Macdonald in his latter days of news reading.
It's called trying to appeal to both possible ancestries.
