It's not all bad. There was definitely less FPs in February
Every day you log in hoping to see something from Genghis, Mary, Neal, Darkbill or hoping to see someone has handed in JP’s mojo to lost property.
Every day hoping the Three Drugees are back together for one last sell-out tour (that’s Des-Stan-Smudge) but sadly not. Even Writer Ken with his thrusting banter.
How about a December face-off amongst erstwhile winners.
You try your hardest and then they go change the measurement criteria. It's just like being at work.
Hang on, I am at work.
Better get back to work then...
Another telling sign of decline
Focussing on the positive, I thought that the John Cage FP was the best in October, and the pool-pissing one was pretty good too. There were other OK ones (I'm not saying the other 29 FPs were crap), but as I went through the October material just now, looking for gems to add to this list of two, I kept saying "oh here's a good one", then realising it was the "From the Archives" FP for that day. There aren't many who can really get away with making negative comments though, because it'll come across as bitterness or arrogance. Aside from the one spectacular lapse, Rikkor has remained 'celibate' in terms of subs, and so paradoxically, may be in the best position to point out the errors of our ways.
Gerontius, I retired from frontline NB last year, but I'm still making a nuisance of myself behind the scenes. Indeed, many of the subs that demonstrate the declining standards of NewsBiscuit probably have my sticky fingerprints all over them...
I agree with GI.
But don’t you think if past WOTM would chip in with a sub now and again it would raise the bar a little.
Not every day, because that seems to hold back the other writers.
Was this time last year when there was a right ding-dong battle going on - all the big hitters were in with a shout of winning. Not only were their subs hot at the time but it raised everybody else’s game too. Quality improved all round.
I’ve done my share of whingeing in the past – especially when they monopolised the FPs day after day and felt too many other contributors had been overlooked.
Well, do you mind if I whinge about it having gone too far the other way now?
On another note : can we have some attitude please.
As suggested elsewhere today, comedy in general does seem to have slumped into some safe middle-class, middle aged narnia.
And now students are so indifferent they have taken asking their mums and dads to go on protest marches for them I don’t see things improving any time soon.
None of them want to be the next Attila the Stockbroker – they just want to be the stockbroker bit.
I've lost the mug now, so might as well say it ;-)
Is it me, or [controversial bit coming up] are the funniest bits getting edited out?
I had around seven NiBs in October, and have to admit to being a little disappointed to how they ended up and what was added in (SONY ToastMan became apple iToast, my flagship school/pirates story was full of stuff about 'CRB certificates' and 'risk assessment reports' while the recent Thursday colour stuff became more about CERN and Higgs Boson)
Maybe it's not for me after all.
I know. If I read one more Large Hardon Collider (or, whatever it is), CERN or Higgs Boson thing here, I will scream.
It does work both ways sometimes, so stay with it Richard
I've had a few things used that bear no resemblance to the sub I posted - and was very grateful for the make-over
But I agree, it does hurt when somebody else polishes your gems
Hi Dicky, first up 7 NiBs in a month sounds pretty good to me, so heck, there's no need to get downhearted...
On your other point I can understand where you're coming from but...
[breaking out now to say I've not been editing NiBs in October, so have no dog in this fight, and am not trying to say your stuff isn't funny nor do I want to start a row. But I have five minutes and think you've made a genuine enquiry so trying to add an honest answer from someone who's massacred somebody's work for a NiB or two in my time. And we're back...]
If you look at the colour for Thursday sub. A nice idea and funny headline, about scientists looking at the colour of days of the week. But after the early stuff, which to me looks like it's been captured in the NiB, it goes off on a tangent on the government, before coming back to the point with some Red October stuff that meanders pleasantly, but doesn't really get anywhere and just adds another dimension -- the movies -- to a simple core idea that's being stretched quite a bit as it is.
It's quite a long sub (300 words or so?), and the upper upper limit you really want for a NiB is 150 words. You take out the perfectly decent idea about the government colour scheme because really it's a different sub. Red October is also a different sub, but not one that is really worth saving from being torpedoed. What's left is basically what you wrote, but it needs a quick punchline. The Hadron Collider stuff is up front in your sub, the 'white with a hint...' line neatly ties up the science and the colour bit of your idea with a nice little bow. I liked it. I think the NiB captured your idea very well and fitted in the space constraints.
Anyway, just a couple of thoughts. I have other people to risk patronising so am poking off. But don't go! From tiny NiBs and all that...
PS. iToast/Sony ToastMan -- toe-may-toe/to-mah-toe as far as I can see, but works either way, and I'd say you could call it a draw.
PPS Hi Gerontius. One day a WoM may rise again, but personally, it's going to take me a while to get over not being Miss October anymore...
Thanks Mr D
I totally agree with your kind dissection - funnily enough I only really started adding extra subjects in to the single-gag pieces based on biscuiteer requests either to 'pad the ideas out' or to make them topical: hence the spending cuts thang.
I agree 7 NiBs ain't bad (I had a few tickers and even an FP too in October, shared with Mr Laurel, but that's another thing]
Was just worried the criteria were becoming 1)clever 2) topical and finally 3)funny, but maybe it isn't after all.
Will keep smiling ;-)
