Following months of political wrangling over who exactly was to blame for the massive UK budget deficit, former Labour Chancellor Alistair Darling has admitted in his memoirs published today that he accidentally switched the economy off in 2008.
Darling was speaking at the launch of his autobiography “Raising Eyebrows”.
“I was just giving the office a run round with the Hoover, and I couldn’t find a spare socket. I pulled out a plug I thought was my desk lamp, and it turned out to be the economy. It was me! I caused the biggest budget deficit in British economic history! Cuh – what a plonker, eh?”
The former Chancellor continued “In my defence, I was a little bit flustered, as Gordon had been in that morning and barked at me “I’m going to have your ass, darling”, and I couldn’t stop thinking about him all day. He's such a cutie."
