Work has begun on the mammoth task of allocating new private sector jobs to the 500,000 public sector workers who will lose their posts as a result of this week’s Spending Review.

Mrs Irene Boggis, a hospital cleaner from Telford, said “I’ve been told I’m going to work in a bank in Dundee. I’m not sure how I’ll get on with the commuting, but I’ll give it a go. It’s a bit like when we were evacuated in the war”.
