The Chilean Mine rescue operation has gone disastrously wrong for an expedition of journalists who were told not to bother coming home unless they had a big story.
As smiling miner after smiling miner was gently teased from the abyss, an suffocating blanket of fear enveloped many of the watching journalists. Some wet themselves, some began to cry and others stared blankly into space, as they realised their last hopes of salvaging a healthy story were slowly dying before their eyes.
'Many of the journalists were holding themselves together incredibly bravely,' said one witness, 'but then someone said cheer up, it might never happen, and they all dissolved into tears.'
