Coalition plans to reduce the size of the UK state by a quarter seem set to lead to one of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales having to go. To avoid additional costs the likeliest choice will be a merger of England and Scotland. The new country will be named using elements of their current names chosen to reflect their entwined national histories. So, England it is then.
Spending review likely to prompt reduction in number of countries in UK

Good rewrite - definitely the strongest gag.
Thanks therustler - works better I think.
Definitely - less is often more.
PS if your moniker is accurate, then I too can join you in that particular club!
In the interest of fairness, I have to point out that Labour had already started 25% reductions. Hazel Blears used to be 6 foot tall, and John Prescott had his own way of reducing size.
As a professional mathematician for the last forty years, can I just say, less is never more. It might be better but it is still less.
As a computer programmer, less can be more. less can even be more than more. it depends on the initial values of less and more.
if(less==more) print "Less is indeed more";
What more proof do you need?
You went with my suggestion... I do think this is a nice, lean gag now. Cool.
About 80% proof, by the sound of it.
@bonjonelson, there's a bug on line 3.
"==" sould read ">".
More smugness becomes less smugness. "C" what I mean ?
Thanks folks for the hints, tips and maths related glee ... RPS
