Overwhelming joy turned to abject despair for the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground when it was discovered rescue workers had been drilling the 500 mts rescue shaft in the wrong place.
Hopes that the miners could be rescued within the next 10-12 days were dashed when rescue co-ordinator Rodriguez Santos admitted the shaft would not actually come out where the miners have been trapped for the past 9 weeks but on the side where he had dropped his Bart Simpson lunch box during the frenzied attempts to escape the collapsing coalmine.
The 27 year old face worker, whose father and two younger brothers are all trapped in the mine, had hoped the lunchbox - said to be one of his favourites - could be rescued from the stricken coalface ahead of the miners, before rising water levels ruined the hinges and turned his uneaten Hershey bar into a soggy mess.
Santos, who had supplied vital information as to the exact location of the trapped miners explained that he had won the lunchbox on eBay and had stayed up until nearly midnight in order to place the winning bid and felt sure the trapped miners would understand his concerns.
News crews from around the world are still covering the trapped miner’s story but CNN are now going with the Hershey bar story and are now offering a 24 hour rolling news bulletin so you won’t miss a thing.
Hershey chocolate bars are an all American product approved by the Union of Orthodox Jews and have been passed as completely Kosher.
