A soldier awarded the George Cross yesterday readily agreed that he is a hero and that what he did to win the award wasn't just doing his job - nor was it what anybody else would have done in the same situation.
'I'm certainly a hero,' Staff Sgt Bill Brand told the shocked award ceremony audience in London. 'No doubt about it. And I certainly deserve the medal. After all, I risked my life rescuing my mates and not many people would have done that.'
Staff Sgt Brand also received a medal recognizing his 'exceptional courage in admitting he was a Hero and eschewing false modesty in the face of immense pressure to pretend it was nothing'.
