"Top" Scientists warned today that drilling Oil Well holes near the North Pole could speed up Earths rotation.
Especially if the Drill gets stuck!
Professor Guy Roscope, from Harvard warned that drilling holes close to the centre of Earths rotational axis could exert additional torque & speed up the earths rotation by a few Picoseconds a day. but this could have a cumulative effect & we may lose Tuesdays permanently.
Drilling nearer the equator, he said has no effect, mainly because everybody is drilling holes around the equator and the Torque effect cancels out.
He suggested, that the licensing authorities should insist that the drillers simultaneously make a hole in the south pole, the drill bit should be run counterclockwise to offset the effect at the North Pole.
He added a further warning though, "That in the event that both drills get stuck at the same time, the counter-torque effect could be dangerous, particularly as there are so many holes around the Equatorial coastal basins. We hope that the earths crust doesn't tear along the dotted line.
