An irate Andrew Strauss berated Sky Sports presenter Michael Atherton today for calling him over for an interview just as the victorious english captain was about to lift the trophy for his teams one day series win over Pakistan.
'I couldn't believe it' said an angry Strauss ' I didn't show my anger at the time because I was so happy after winning the game but on hindsight, Atherton was completely out of order for interupting my special moment of lifting the cup' continued the unhappy Captain 'just because he won fuck all when he was Captain doesn't mean he can spoil it for me'.
Atherton defended his over eagerness to interview Strauss by saying ' i'm afraid it's a compulsion that runs in the family' said the mancunian ex england captain ' it all started with my great great great great grandfather Thomas Atherton who was a war correspondent for the english civil war in the seventeenth century. It was he who interupted the executioneer at the steps of the guillotine to ask for a few words with King Charles before he was beheaded. Unfortunatley for Thomas he was just a little to late as the guillotine fell chopping off the Kings head and the top of Thomas's microphone in the process'.
Atherton continued to amaze the assembled press with more ancestral historical corresponding anecdotes ' everybody remembers well where they were when Kennedy was shot. Well my Uncle Brian can go one better than that as it was he who interupted Lee Harvey Oswald for a few words between shots as he assasinated the President'.
'On reflection Andrew Strauss can count his blessings that he was only interupted as he was about to lift a cup and was not about to be shot or executed' said Athers ' some people just don't know there born'.
