The Rule of Thumb for 3rd world status is difficult to handily formulmate, but there is a clear, "positive", relationahip between religious tat - such as sainthoods and gaudy processions intended to drive off "evil spirits" - and dire material and intellectual poverty. Remember that the 20th Century's Spanish saint turned out to have been a Chester The Molester, one such among those over whom Lacrimae Crocodillae were shed - to its' shame - at Westminster, this week.
