Keen motorist, David Cooper (47) got the shock of his life this week when he went to his local Mini dealership to buy a new Mini Cooper. "I'd been saving up for ages" said David "and I'd had my eye on a Mini Cooper for almost as long. It looked just the car I was looking for."
Negotiations with Sales Manager Sean Davis (26) went well at first. David admired the shining paintwork and the modern interior and was sure that the test drive would demonstrate the smooth manoueverability that the car's sleek looks promised. But the test drive never happened.
"It was when the salesman asked me which free sticker I might like that things went wrong. Apparently I could have 'The self preservation Society' or 'You were only meant to blow the bloody doors off'. I've never been a fan of Michael Caine films, finding his dry cockney persona particularly irksome, but I recognised the references. When I mentioned that I'd never actually seen The Italian Job, the salesman sort of froze. Then he said,"I suppose you'll be telling me next that you don't want to drive like a twat, that you don't see yourself as a lovable scamp who can avoid prosecution for any traffic violation, however egregious, with a twinkly smile or bit of rogueish banter, that you don't think the Mini Cooper represents all the best of British and that, by driving one, some of this will rub off on you." He went on in similar vein for some time, getting hotter and hotter under the collar and turning an interesting shade of purple. When I managed to get a word in edgeways, I said that, as a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, I perhaps didn't. At which point it was mutually agreed that I should leave and spend my money somewhere else.
No Mini for Cooper
