Police forces across England and Wales no longer have the financial or manpower resources to ‘leave no stone unturned’ during criminal investigations, a senior police figure warned last night.
“It’s unavoidable that with budgets under pressure there’s likely to be some impact on our stone-turning capabilities,” said Paul McKeever, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales.
“Whether these undisturbed stones are concealing drugs, hiding key evidence or harbouring violent criminals will, of course, be impossible to say.”
McKeever also sees the cuts going beyond stone-based imagery to affect other investigative metaphors.
“Officers will only have the capacity to explore a limited number of the avenues open to them. It’s because they’ll now have to explore each avenue on foot, or possibly share mountain bikes.”
McKeever hinted that cash-strapped police forces may find themselves taking advantage of gravity. “Without the necessary manpower to search both high and low, I expect we’ll probably favour low,” he admitted.

this really should have reference to a rolling stone gathers no moss. Maybe police should only check moss free stones to reduce their workload.

I think it's fine as it is. I don't see the need to introduce the rolling stone metaphor.

It was only a suggestion!

Thanks folks (I think Bill Wyman tried to pick up Kate Moss once: or was that just a tired old gag about a Rolling Stone gathering Moss...)
