Ricky Gervais, since they will insist on incorrectly calling him a comedian.

the bloke with a black beard on 8 Out of 10 Cats who just swears
Posted 4 years ago # -
Can't agree. Ricky Gervais' stand up shows are clever and very funny (to me) and Johnnie Vegas can be funny too.
I really don't get that twat with the moustache and bandaged hand. I'll try and remember his name... Kieth Lemon. Just never close to funny.
Just had to look him up and now I know that it's an actor called Leigh Francis who plays a character called Kieth Lemon. (much the same as Johnnie Vegas) Why would anyone create such an unfunny cnut? Am I showing my age?Posted 4 years ago # -
Yup Keith Lemon gets my vote

Stewart Lee. Just because you keep repeating it, it doesn't make it funny.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Keith Lemon and bloke with black beard as above, both dire. I like Gervais.

Interesting to sef some controversial choices. Personally, Gervais still has a free pass from The Office, and I will watch anything Joe Wilkinson is in. Vegas did a great radio series about a pottery night school. My vote is still split between Mrs Brown, Russell Howard and Lemon.

These sort of conversations never end well as comedy is so subjective. However I have recently had the misfortune to twice catch some chap called Spencer Jones on TV stand up comedy shows and I literally had to turn it off.
If you are very brave, here's an iPlayer link to Live at the Apollo.
He's thae last one on. Can anyone explain if, why and to whom his stuff is funny? Personally, I think if comedy were modern art, he would be the massive arse with a dead shark hanging out of his hole but that's a game for another thread.

Mrs Brown, I cannot believe it is still popular, Keith Lemon and Russell Howard as well. I think a pattern is emerging.

I think Johnny Vegas is pretty reasonable - he seems quite funny when he makes stuff up on the spot.

Spencer Jones is the worst "comedian" that I've seen by a long margin. That Apollo routine was the worst thing I've ever seen broadcast on television. There was nothing remotely funny about it at all.Posted 4 years ago # -
Keith Lemon, Joe Wilkinson & Mrs Brown. I rather like Johnny Vegas

I haven't yet seen Asian Provocateur but I'm afraid I've yet to be tickled by Romesh Ranganathan, who seems to be there because we're eager to have an Asian comic. However, Nish Kumar is excellent. And yes, I did Google their names.

Hello. Well, I'd never heard of Spencer Jones so I gave him a try and, yes, he's shot straight to the top of the chart.
He may be part of some BBC plan to make comedy less Oxbridge, a plan that overnight gave us Mrs Brown, John Bishop and that Citizen Khan fella.Gervais can be annoying when he's trying to justify his more cruel brand of comedy, but as others have said his one-man shows can be bloody funny.
Dapper Laughs is a gormless cunt.

Shappi Khorsandi. Would she have got anywhere at all if she wasn't an attractive woman? Utterly unfunny. Same to a lesser degree with Sara Pascoe.
Acting a character and doing stand up aren't the same thing, though Johnny Vegas blurs the lines better than most.

To be honest, I think they’re struggling to find good female participants for the panel shows, not that women aren’t funny but the bear-pit of banter-based comedy is perhaps not attractive to everyone. Sara Pascoe and Katherine Ryan seem to have them pretty sewn up, though personally I like The Ryan. Also, Aisling Bea regularly knocks it out the park.

David Walliams.

An evening of absolute comedy horror for me would be watching Sarah Millican and Michael Mcintyre.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Aisling Bea can definitely have my children.
Seriously. I'm sick of the little fuckers.

Joe Wilkinson
He's like a 14 year old learning to swear to impress his mates.
OK Joe....it's 2017, we know you can swear on TV now. Just give it a rest and try to be funny. Have a go at comedy. Swearing and drinking lager is not an act.Aisling Bea....fine comedian and top actor.
And the other thing too.Posted 4 years ago # -
<Whispers> I never really liked Spike Milligan.

Forgot about Shappi Khorsandi.
Her routine is basically as follows 'I'm Iranian isn't that funny'
...er no you'll need a bit more than that.
And while we're at it Andi Osho whose routine is the same except
replace Iranian with Nigerian.Posted 4 years ago # -
Me too on Milligan, but when I voiced that in a similar thread some years ago I was chastened and derided for my humorical naivety and immaturity.
He churned out the cows going pong, ping, or whatever the fuck it was too many times, to an adulation game audience. It's Bowie, the latter years all over again for me.

You were quite rightly chastened and derided. Shame upon you! Stone him, stone him, an unbeliever!

Milligan lacked a quality control filter, but there are reasons he's revered by later comedians.
I suppose I should add Omad Djalili in the 'look at me, I'm foreign' list of one-joke comedians before Roger the Proud Lesbian Bogbrush calls me a sexist. Romesh Raganathan and Henning Wehn show that you can grow beyond that.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Yup, Henning Wehn does irony even better than most Brits.
Posted 4 years ago # -
Milligan lacked a quality control filter Yes. Most comedians go off the boil after a while and just get bland but Milligan was still capable of edgy genius at the end. However, his troubled mental state (and lack of collaborators) meant that the flashes of brilliance could sometimes get lost in the mix.
Milligan’s infamous epitaph 'I told you I was ill' was voted the all time best.

It's on his tombstone, in Gaelic, at Winchelsea in Kent. Comedy probably owes a debt of gratitude to Eric Sykes, far from a brilliant writer in his own right, IMHO, but able to cope with and channel Milligan's mania to good effect.
