The once respected Black Beret is regarded nothing more than a piece of comical headwear, what once symbolised political struggle and black power against the oppression of US government has been reduced to a figure of fun.
The Black Panther’s movement began in 1966, Bobby Seale a founder member said
‘Frank Spencer’s just another whitey bringing down a symbol of my peoples struggle , my brothers and sisters fought bloody street battles wearing the black beret, we overcame decades of persecution and victimisation until he came on the scene.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover had called the party “the greatest threat to the internal security of the country,” and he supervised an extensive program (COINTELPRO) which involved pumping out Frank Spencer’s ‘ Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em ’ repeats to the nation thereby enforcing a subliminal message that the beret wearing Black Panthers were nothing more than haples, clumsy, farcical black Frank Spencer’s, undermining the movement and its policies.
‘I couldn’t put the beret on without some wise ass calling out ‘hmmmmmm Betty the cat’s done a woopsie’ , said Bobby, that Frank Spencer brought down the movement,, we tried different hats but no one was feeling it anymore.’
The Black Panthers dissolved in 1976 after brother Huey P. Newton held a sermon on the steps of Oakland court house, its not clear who said what but it is said there was definetly a ‘whoopsie’ and a full scale riot unfolded.
Most of the members left to join the black power movement ,they had the black glove but they eventually got their own Frank Spencer in the shape of Michael Jackson.
