Following the swinging cuts to police budgets, a delegation of senior police officers have travelled to Japan to investigate a new innovation in crime fighting robots that could cut crime significantly at a fraction of the cost. The robots, life size models of real policeman, would be placed at strategic points in major cities and crime hot spots. “It’s very clever” said one police chief, “though there remain a few minor technical glitches”. Apparently, they can be slow to respond to reported crime, sometimes taking hours or even days, can get bogged down in paperwork, stop a disproportionate number of non-Caucasians and randomly Taser individuals for no apparent reason. There are no plans at present to arm them with live weapons.
