Embarassed council officials on the Isle of Wight are set to end a minutes silence that started back in 1897.
It seems the minutes silence, held in honour of the then island mascot, a tortoise named Boris has never officially ended and to this day is still being impecably observed by the islanders.
Legend has it that Boris, an 87 year old Thighed Tunisian Spur life was tragically cut short when he fell into a bowl of freshly made jelly and was unable to escape in time.
'Young Boris was the most loved mascot we have ever had on the island' said Arnold Lawrence, a recently retired gas-lamp lighter from the deep south of the island 'his legacy lives on and his influence can be seen everywhere you go. He really made a lasting impression on the residents, filled them with the sort of drive and enthusiasm which - even after all these years - can still be seen today.
There are stories that people came from as far away as Northwood but I can't really be sure about that, It must be getting on for 3 miles and I've never been'.
Town mayor Elijah Crood, at the time the only person on the island who new how to operate one of those new-fangled inventions (the pocket-watch) had announced the start of the minutes silence at precisely 11am on Sunday, 19th June 1897.
But after a few seconds he fell asleep and when he woke up, forgot to announce the end of the minutes silence.
News that someone had recently painted a gate post had already spread like wildfire amongst the congregation and they all rushed off to watch it dry.
Mourners came from all over the island to pay their respects. Queues formed around the block so that people could file past to see Boris laid out in an open shoe box.
'At the time those queues were incredible and went all around the church.' said local historian Clive Morgan 'and with a bit of luck the last of them should be trooping by any minute now. Just how Boris would have wanted it'.
