Perhaps there is an angle that the Germans WANT us there, otherwise Oktoberfest would be a woefully underfunded and a lot less entertaining for the locals. Ditto the autobahn would suffer from the lack of soldiers breaking the sound barrier 'because they can'.

Just a thought. I am sure that theme could be built upon, to include prostitutes & stuff.

Harking back to an earlier war, perhaps we’re there to protect the Russians from the French?

Whereas I fully understand why we're still in Sausageland, there's more than a little irony that we're still occupying Germany to prevent their imperialist intentions.

Maybe our withdrawal coincidences with Merkel helping out Greece, and plans for Italy and Poland. Surprise visits to Belgium and Netherlands.

A new angle on old jokes ?

Seeing as he is a little englander how about something alone the lines if 'they're still not to be trusted, look what they tried in the Falklands and that cheating Maradona.'

Like the idea of still not trusting the Germans enough to withdraw

Plans to withdraw remaining UK troops from Germany by the end of the decade have been criticised by hardliners within the UK’s nostalgia community. “This is just what the Hun has been waiting for, an opportunity to pounce whilst our back is turned.” said George Evans (56) of High Wycombe, who has 1940s newsreels and ‘Yesterday’ TV series running on a continual loop in his shed. And in his head. “We should remain there for a thousand years.”

However, this attitude has itself come under fire from Mr Evans’ local branch of the Royal British Legion where a spokesman said this morning “Well yes, old George has got a bee in his bonnet about Germany and his ‘thousand years’ idea is clearly ridiculous. But we should probably stay there until the war is over. Or at least until Hitler is dead.”

Jokes welcome
