Archaeologists searching for buried World War II Spitfires in Burma have turned their attention to a car-park in Leicester.
The Spitfires were believed to have been buried by the RAF towards the end of the war to stop them falling into enemy hands but so far the search has drawn a blank.
But now archaeologists working on the project think they may have been looking in the wrong place all along and will concentrate their search on the Leicester car-park instead.
The decision was taken after bones uncovered in the car-park turned out to be that of the last Plantagenet king, Richard III
‘What are the chances of that’? asked projects manager Berwick Gleave ‘if they can find a king buried in the car-park then there has to be a chance we could find a Spitfire.
The odds are definitely in our favour. Don’t forget, there was only ever one king but there are believed to be over 120 Spitfires buried out there somewhere.
We think the decision was taken to bury the aircraft before anybody came up with the idea of using them to stop Germans from bombing the city.
It was obvious really’.
Although some sceptics are now saying the whole story of buried Spitfires was just a myth concocted by Allied forces desperate to escape the rat infested hell-hole and return home, aviation enthusiast Denis Cundell is adamant such a thing exists.
‘Oh, it definitely exists all right, we found it on Google earth’ said Cundell.....‘it’s just off Junction 21 on the M1...I believe Gary Lineker comes from there’.
