With the Eastleigh by-election fast approaching, the Labour party have shown they are finally listening to the electorate. By selecting comedy writer John O'Farrell to stand in the constituency left vacant by Chris Huhne, they now have a candidate that can confidently and honestly answer 'yes' to the most common question asked during door-to-door canvassing.

''Are you some sort of comedian?' has been a standard reply when we talk about our economic legacy' Labour leader Ed Miliband told supporters. 'In fact, it's the standard reply when we talk about both of our current policies and when we ask if we can count on people's vote. With John, we can now answer the question with a big fat positive yes. We can even make the promise that he's a comedian knowing we won't have to break it. The is truly new New not old New, New Labour.'

Mr O'Farrell was said to be delighted with the appointment and even joked about the 'Labour by- election machine' not giving him the time to go to the pub. However his surprise appointment has seen the other candidates take the campaign a bit more seriously. Mike Thornton, the Lib Dem nomination has told us 'I fully intend to listen to the voters and take all of their points on-board, before passing them on to Chris Huhne's wife'.
