Barclays executives were on the offensive today after a Cheshire man was accused of deception over a 2008 loan that the bank made to him. Justin Lander applied for the loan so he could reinvest in his flagging business making flags but Barclays claim after studying the small print of the loan agreement with an electron microscope they realised that the local kebab shop proprietor, Ali Bin Rashid, owned the collateral for the £50,000 amount.
“We would never have invested had we been informed of Mr Rashid’s involvement”, a spokesman for the financial giant proclaimed.
“The kebab business is well known to be dangerously unstable and subjecting our shareholders to such risk would be an untenable position for us”.
Mr Lander claims that it was a ‘drafting error’ in the agreement that caused the confusion and admitted that he was remiss by not using a draft excluder to prevent the issue, though he insists ‘appropriate disclosure’ was made.
Mr Rashid declined to comment on the issue this evening but did offer this reporter some salad and chilli sauce.
The embattled bank has seen its share of controversy in recent years with Bond yields on the decline. When asked to comment on this issue the spokesman admitted mistakes; “Yes, we were wrong to invest so heavily in the spy film franchise, it cost us dearly. We should have realised Diamond’s not forever”.
