News that Mumford and Sons have walked away with the Best Album of the Year award at this years Grammy’s has sent shockwaves throughout the Catholic Church.
A spokesman for the Vatican said the award for ‘Babel’ - Mumford and Sons follow up to the 2009 chart-topping ‘Sigh No More’ - had come as a complete surprise and was totally unexpected amongst church regulars.
One of the Pope’s closest aides described the award as ‘incredulous’ and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti was said to be visibly shaken by the announcement.
Although moves of this magnitude are extremely rare in the music industry, in theory there had been nothing wrong with the Mumford decision and there was little the Church could do about it.
But the Vatican are already asking the music industry to think again about the award and have asked for a ‘cooling off’ period.
The last time an album as bad as this won a Grammy was back in 1415 when Venetian rapper Greg O Ry XII (born Angelo Correr) took the award amid a schism within the church.
The English folk-rock outfit had been nominated in six categories at this years awards but despite a conveyor belt of free drink and drugs, seemingly no one at the ceremony got so shit-faced they were ever going to let that happen.
