Education Secretary Michael Gove is planning to replace core GCSE A-level qualifications with one A-level in U-turn Studies.

'It'll be a sort of baccalaureate in chopping and changing,' said a Department for Education spokesman, 'and an absolutely essential preparation for a changing world.

'Michael Gove is supremely qualified to introduce this change to our examination system.'

But the education secretary has already backed down on his plan for the new qualification to be taught in Mandarin and educationalists are doubtful if the proposal will ever be implemented.

'Mr Gove will do a U-turn on this by the middle of next week,' predicted one experienced teacher.
