Government ministers have defended their policy of taking money off poor people after accusations that some still have cash in their pockets.

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has admitted that despite cuts to welfare benefits, some poor people 'are still putting food on the table and able to afford to send their children to school wearing shoes'.

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne is reported to be working on plans to clamp down on poor people who are avoiding handing money to the government to help struggling bankers, by hiding money under the bed and in outside lavatories.

'This government is on track to make sure that the poor won't have a bean by 2015', Mr Duncan Smith said, ' and I am working hard on policies to prise the last penny from their fingers.'

Challenged over the fairness of his policies, Mr Duncan Smith said,'They're the deserving poor aren't they, so they deserve it.'
