Now, I don't want to get all "When I was a lad" about this, but when I was a lad the only kids who got to skip school were the one's the villages that the bus could not get to, and even those often turned up later in the day. The rest of us had to trudge Scott of the Antarctic like a good mile or somethimes more through the snow. After that we would throw snowballs at each other that sometimes contained rock hard ice, or indeed rocks. Once we got there, the hard pressed staff who had made it in were apparently allowed to inflict minor head injuries on us to keep us in line, and we were send outside at break and lunchtime.</p> <p>A slippery playground is cured by something called "Shovel and salt". It's quite simple, I did it for my elderly neighbour's driveway this week, as did several of the other neighbours, along with a conversation that goes "Do you need anything from the shop?".</p> <p>In the summer we used real pointy Javelins and did the long jump into a disgusting pit of sand that was basically a home for cat turds. And don't even mention the Rugby games.
