The now infamous horse, traces of which have been found in Tesco beef burgers, may be the one lent to Rebekah Brooks, former editor of the News of the World. Last year it emerged that Brooks was unofficially lent a police horse by Scotland Yard, and that her friend the Prime Minister had ridden the horse.

Now it has emerged that Mrs Brooks, keen to hide the evidence of alleged impropriety, may have had the horse secretly minced and sold to Tesco – thereby simultaneously destroying the evidence and making a profit. Brooks denies the story and says she is not suffering from Mad Cow disease, a condition which plagued previous Conservative governments and led to Edwina Curries’ famous egg scandal involving breakfast with the then John Major.
