The title didn't quite grab me, which is why I've only just read it properly. The content is excellent, but the punchline IMO drifts off slightly. Couldn't do better myself, obviously.

It's also short for "submarine", if that helps.

Sub here is short for "submission", a piece submitted for consideration.

We also sometimes use it as a verb, which confuses journalists who use "subbing" to mean sub-editing.

thanks I've lurked for a while and realised I've not done any proper non-academic writing for about 5 years. Just a quick question what do you mean by sub? Is that a heading or a word for first post or what? I'm a bit ignorant on what the deal with newsbiscuit is I just enjoy the writing.

Nice first sub.

I have an issue with over reaction to non stories.

Japan Airlines today said that a horrific fire that broke out on one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners while parked and not-filled with passengers in Boston was minor and dealt with quickly by ground staff.

Dramatic video shows the Dreamliner dramatically immobile on tarmac engulfed by fire-crews and thick billowing clouds, of a mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen

The non-inferno engulfed the airliner which was not-packed with up to 300 passengers. Women and children were suspected to have been on the plane before disembarking at the destination where it didn't spectacularly burst into flames a while after the plane was emptied.

Expert sources on the crash have contributed to this rapidly developing story "I don't want to be an alarmist, but onboard fires on airplanes are as bad as it gets," said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets in Virginia (Genuine Quote). Confirming public suspicions about fires on commercial airliners.

Onlookers have stated how awful it would have been if the fire had been in mid-air and the plane had been full of a school returning from a trip to japan, or if it had been carrying popular boy band One Direction back from a tour of the US, or if it had been a boat on the ocean, and had hit an iceberg and there weren't enough lifejackets for everyone on the seabound plane and they had to shoot some passengers to stop them from taking the lifejackets. One onlooker remarked "It was like a horrible movie or some other piece of fiction"

Boeing have said they will look into technical faults and have acknowledged problems with a brand new airline that has passed a huge number of technical safety tests. For this impoverished reporter, this can't happen soon enough. This definitely cannnot happen soon enough
