They noticed that large spikes in the data coincided with events linked to last year’s London Olympics.</p> <p>Explaining the link Professor Bob France commented “We saw significant increases in reported numbers several months after the Summer Olympics as the brouhaha ran over into peoples lives. Secondly in the run up to the Sports Personality of the Year Awards there was another rise in people reporting symptoms at GP surgeries and finally we saw an escalation around the New Year’s honours list in which many Olympians received awards”. </p> <p>Professor France went on to say “I think people are just sick of the relentless back patting and glorification of the achievements of a couple of Olympians over summer”.</p> <p>The likelihood of such an outbreak of praise for sports people within Great Britain is very rare and Professor France went on to say “Don’t expect a repeat of the Olympic Vomiting Bug any time soon. The next Olympics will be held in Rio and so I certainly don’t expect a repeat of this virus in four years time”. </p>
